The Disneyland Line

The Disneyland Resort Line is a bi-weekly magazine physically published for the Cast Members of the Disneyland Resort and digitally available for the other branches of the Walt Disney Company. As the Graphic Design Intern for the Shared Creative Services team that worked with the Public Affairs and Internal Communication of the Resort, I was given the responsibility of creating layouts for the articles and occasionally managers chose my work for the cover. Whether it is creating illustrations that emphasize the story or take inspiration from trending design aesthetics, I continually strived to provide Cast Members something fresh and stylish to feast their eyes on.

Issue 15: Fantasmic! is Back

In the summer of 2017, the Disneyland Park relaunched its Rivers of America attractions, including the fan-favorite show: "Fantasmic!" After an 18-Month hiatus to accommodate construction work for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the Entertainment team used the time as an opportunity to revamp the show, making it bigger and better than ever. With a story as exciting as Fantasmic!, I wanted to give the story a visual presence worthy of Mickey's powerful imagination, incorporating my own illustrations, a little pixie dust, and photo manipulation to make the newly refurbished Maleficent dragon loom over the magazine's title.

Issue 18: The Foodie Issue

The Disneyland Parks and Resorts have taken great strides to give guests new and innovative things to look forward to... and that definitely includes their food! From countless churro flavors and Groot shaped sourdough bread to artisan pizza and inventive hotdogs. With attractive social media posts on the rise, we wanted to give the issue an Insta-worthy aesthetic — incorporating the app's infamous gradient, wireframe-inspired graphics, and skillfully edited yet effortlessly gorgeous photos.

Issue 19: What’s Your Story?

What genuinely makes the Disneyland Parks and Resort so magical is without-a-doubt the Cast Members. Issue 19, Guest Relation team's new tours, merchandise's Secret Missions binder, and Bibbity Boppity Boutique's FGiTs (fi·juht — short for "Fairy Godmothers in Training"). For the headlining article, I took inspiration from the intricately decorated Fairytale books that inspired classic Disney animated films, such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. Thus I chose to work with a calligraphy-inspired typeface, intricate frames and ornaments, and gave the pages a vintage texture and stained hue.

Issue 20: Time to Cast The Spell

The Halloween issue was particularly special to me. Not only is the spooky holiday my favorite season, but my Art Director asked me to work with him on a special cover. With the new Halloween and Nightmare Before Christmas editions to the Disney California Adventure park, we featured artwork of the infamous villain Oogie Boogie. Unlike other issues, the Cast Your Spell cover would be given unique treatments. After exploring ideas with our local printer, including Glow-In-The-Dark ink, we chose to emboss and deboss the cover as well as include a metallic ink to give a luminescent sheen on the glowing green areas. It was my responsibility to digitally cut out the layers for the body of Oogie Boogie to emboss, the bats to gloss, as well as the words and face of Oogie Boogie for the metallic ink. This cover also required me to participate in on-site press checks with the printer.

Issue 23: Disney Style

With the release of two new shops in Downtown Disney — the Dream Boutique and The Disney Dress Shop — that cater to the magically fashion-minded guests, the team of the Disneyland Line decided to run a Fashion Issue. Heavily inspired by Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, the Disney Style article featured weighted san-serifs and trending rose-gold-toned accents highlighting select shots from editorial style fashion shoots throughout the Disneyland Park and in the Internal Communications and Public Affairs' studio.

Issue 24: Holidays at the Disneyland Resort

From gingerbread scented "snow" that falls on Main Street USA to the cultural cuisines at Festival of Holidays, The winter holidays are certainly a merriest time for the "Happiest Place on Earth." At the top of the list "12 Things You (Probably) Didn't know about the Holidays at the Disneyland Resort" was the 20-foot tall bear in front of Grizzly River Run (affectionately known as Timmy the Bear by Cast) who gets a seasonal sweater and a new hat to wear. Inspired by Timmy's festive outfit, I created a knitted design throughout the articles.

Issue 26: 2017 Recap

Wrapping up 2017 also meant wrapping up my year with the Walt Disney Company — beginning the year as a Photopass Photographer for Hollywood Studios in the Walt Disney World Parks and Resort and finishing the year as the Graphic Design Intern for the Internal Communications and Public Affairs team of The Disneyland Parks and Resort. This issue takes a look at the one-of-a-kind experience of being Cast Members in 2017 together at the Disneyland Resort.
